Benefits of Fall Planting Trees + Shrubs

The heat of the summer has passed, and now is a great time to plant those trees and shrubs you’ve been thinking about all year. While planting in the spring takes advantage of the growing season, planting your trees and shrubs in the fall also has its benefits!

  1. Cooler temperatures means less stress on your plants. With the high summer temperatures behind us, fall provides a less stressful environment for newly planted trees and shrubs. Root systems won’t have to compete with high heat and moisture loss, which helps lessen the transplant shock on the plant. Cooler air temperatures also reduces evaporation, which helps the soil retain moisture more effectively.

  2. Increased root development. In the fall, the soil temperature generally remains warmer, even as the air temperature begins to cool. These warmer soil temperatures can encourage root growth, which gives the plants a head start going into the winter as well as for the following spring.

  3. Less pest and disease pressure. Many pests and disease which can negatively affect trees and shrubs are significantly less active in the fall than the spring and summer. The reduced pressure from insects and disease makes it easier for plants to establish themselves without battling the negative effects of pests.

  4. Easier moisture management. The cooler fall temperatures reduces the frequency of manual watering, making it easier to keep plants hydrated and less stressed.

  5. Spring is a busy time for everyone. It can be hard to find the time to properly care for newly planted trees and shrubs. By planting your trees and shrubs in the fall, your spring workload is reduced and you can focus on school year-end and the busy schedule that comes with family.

  6. Discounts! Fall can be a great time to find the trees and shrubs you’ve been looking for at a discount. The selection at the garden centre may not be as extensive as during the spring, but you can likely find hardy, well-established plants that are ready to be planted at a great price.

Here are some tips for fall planting your trees and shrubs:

-plant early to allow trees and shrubs time to establish. Try to plant by late September or early October.
-Mulch. Adding a thick layer of mulch around the base of your plants will help insulate the roots, retain moisture and prevent soil erosion.
-Water well. Ensure your plants are well-hydrated going into the winter (especially if precipitation in the fall is low). Proper watering will help them survive winter conditions.
-Choose the right species. Choosing hardy, cold-resistant trees and shrubs that are suitable for Zone 3 will have the best chance of survival.

Happy planting!
