Aloe Vera
Aloe vera
Care Difficulty
Easy. One of the easiest succulents to grow, making it an excellent choice for beginners.
Light Requirements
Bright light to full sun. A south- or west-facing window is ideal. Aloe Vera thrives with at least 6 hours of bright light each day but should be gradually acclimated to intense direct sun.
Water Requirements
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water deeply, then let excess water drain away. Water much less frequently during the winter months.
Humidity
Prefers low to average humidity and grows well in typical household conditions.
Pet Safety
Not pet safe. Aloe Vera is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested and may cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. The gel inside the leaves is commonly used for people, but the outer leaf contains compounds that are harmful to pets.
Growth Speed
Moderate. Produces new leaves steadily and often develops offsets, or "pups," around the base.
Expected Mature Size
- Height: 12 to 24 inches
- Width: 12 to 24 inches
Pot Size
Repot every 2 to 3 years or when the plant becomes crowded. Use a pot with drainage holes and a cactus or succulent potting mix.
Where it Grows Best
Indoors in a bright, sunny location with temperatures between 60 and 85°F (16 to 29°C). It can be moved outdoors during the summer in a sunny location once nighttime temperatures remain above 50°F (10°C). Bring it indoors before the first frost in Zone 3.

Common Mistakes
- Overwatering, which can quickly lead to root rot.
- Using regular potting soil instead of a well-draining succulent mix.
- Allowing the plant to sit in standing water.
- Growing in insufficient light, resulting in weak, stretched growth.
- Choosing a pot without drainage holes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Aloe Vera gel on burns?
The clear gel inside healthy Aloe Vera leaves has traditionally been used to soothe minor burns and skin irritation. Use only fresh, healthy leaves, and seek medical advice for serious burns or injuries.
How often should I water Aloe Vera?
Water only after the soil has dried completely. This is typically every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the season, pot size, and indoor conditions.
Why are my Aloe leaves turning brown or soft?
Soft, mushy leaves usually indicate overwatering. Brown leaf tips may be caused by underwatering, excessive direct sun after a sudden move, or natural aging.
Can I grow Aloe Vera outdoors?
Yes. In Zone 3, Aloe Vera can be enjoyed outdoors during the summer but must be brought indoors before nighttime temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C).
What are the baby plants growing around the base?
These are called pups or offsets. They can be separated once they have developed their own roots to grow new Aloe Vera plants.
How often should I fertilize it?
Feed once or twice during spring and summer with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer. Aloe Vera requires very little fertilizer and does not need feeding during winter.
