Monstera ‘Cobra’ – Care Guide

Overview

Monstera ‘Cobra’ is a rare Monstera standleyana albo-variegata cultivar, sometimes incorrectly labeled under the Philodendron family due to similar growth habits. It features elongated oval leaves with dramatic white or cream variegation, which can appear as speckles, streaks, or full sectors. This tropical climbing aroid is prized for both its rare coloring and compact vertical growth — making it ideal for small spaces or collectors.

Key Characteristics

Botanical Name: Monstera standleyana ‘Albo Variegata’
Common Name: Monstera ‘Cobra’
Plant Type: Tropical climbing aroid
Growth Habit: Upright, vining/climbing
Mature Height (indoors): 3–6 feet with support
Leaf Shape: Lance-shaped, glossy, no fenestrations, with marbled variegation
Rarity: Considered a rare collector’s plant

Light Requirements

Bright, indirect light is ideal to maintain strong variegation
Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch white areas
In low light, the plant may revert to more green and grow slower

Watering Needs

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feels dry
Likes consistent moisture but not sogginess
Reduce watering in winter
Avoid letting roots sit in water — well-draining pot is essential

Soil & Potting

Prefers a well-draining, chunky aroid mix:

    • Potting soil + orchid bark + perlite + a touch of peat/coco coir

Pot must have good drainage holes
Repot every 1–2 years or when root-bound

Temperature & Humidity

Ideal temperature: 18–27°C (65–80°F)
Avoid exposure to temps below 13°C (55°F)
Loves high humidity (60–80%)

    • Use a humidifier or group with other plants

    • Brown tips may indicate low humidity

Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer
Variegated plants are more sensitive — always dilute fertilizer
Skip or reduce fertilizing in fall/winter

Common Problems

Yellowing leaves: Usually from overwatering or poor drainage
Brown tips: Low humidity or underwatering
Pests: Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, and scale

    • Treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap

Toxicity

Toxic to pets and humans if ingested (calcium oxalate crystals)

  • Keep away from cats, dogs, and children

Bonus Tips

Provide a moss pole or trellis to encourage larger growth
Rotate regularly to promote even growth and light exposure
Clean leaves gently to keep them glossy and pest-free
