Green Carpet Juniper is a low-growing, dense, evergreen groundcover shrub with soft green foliage that remains vibrant year-round. It is extremely cold-hardy (Zone 2-6), drought-tolerant, and low-maintenance, making it an excellent choice for Southwest Saskatchewan. This juniper is ideal for erosion control, rock gardens, and mass plantings, as it spreads slowly to form a lush, weed-suppressing mat.

Planting & Location

• Hardiness Zone: 2-6 (perfect for harsh prairie winters)
• Mature Size: 8-12 inches tall, 4-6 feet wide
• Growth Rate: Slow to moderate (6-12 inches per year)
• Sunlight Needs: Full sun to partial shade (best color in 6+ hours of sunlight)
• Soil Preference:
  • Prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soil.
  • Tolerates rocky, alkaline, and clay soils if drainage is good.
  • Avoid waterlogged soil, as junipers dislike excessive moisture.
• Spacing: 4-6 feet apart for groundcover, 8+ feet apart for individual plantings.

Watering

• Young Plants (First 1-2 Years): Water deeply once per week to establish roots.
• Established Plants: Drought-tolerant; water every 2-3 weeks in dry conditions.
