Taxus × media ‘Morden Upright’

Morden Upright Yew is a cold-hardy, narrow, upright evergreen shrub known for its dense, dark green foliage and year-round interest. It is extremely adaptable (Zone 3-7), shade-tolerant, and easy to maintain, making it an excellent choice for Southwest Saskatchewan. This yew is often used for hedges, privacy screens, foundation plantings, and vertical accents.

Planting & Location

  • Hardiness Zone: 3-7 (very winter-hardy)
  • Mature Size: 6-8 feet tall, 3-4 feet wide
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate (6-12 inches per year)
  • Sunlight Needs: Full sun to full shade (one of the best evergreens for shady areas!)
  • Soil Preference:
    • Prefers well-drained, loamy soil but tolerates clay and sandy soils.
    • Adapts to slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soil (pH 5.5-7.5).
    • Avoid standing water—yews dislike wet roots.
  • Spacing: 3-4 feet apart for a hedge, 5-6 feet apart for individual plantings.

Watering

  • Young Shrubs (First 1-2 Years): Water deeply once per week to establish roots.
  • Established Shrubs: Drought-tolerant; water every 2-3 weeks in dry conditions.
  • Avoid Overwatering: Prefers moist but well-drained soil—does not tolerate soggy conditions.

Fertilizing

  • First Year: No fertilizer needed—focus on root development.
  • Mature Shrubs:
    • Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) in early spring if growth is slow.
    • Organic alternative: Compost or well-rotted manure in spring.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Best Time to Prune: Early spring (before new growth) or late summer.
  • How to Prune:
    • Trim lightly to maintain its natural upright shape.
    • Remove dead or damaged branches to promote healthy growth.
    • Can be shaped into a hedge or left in its natural columnar form.

Pest & Disease Management

Highly resistant to pests and diseases, but minor issues can occur.

Common Pests:

  • Scale Insects – Small, waxy pests that cause yellowing needles.
    • Solution: Treat with horticultural oil in early spring.
  • Spider Mites – Can cause browning in hot, dry weather.
    • Solution: Hose off with water or use insecticidal soap.

Common Diseases:

  • Root Rot (Phytophthora, Armillaria) – A risk in poorly drained soil.
    • Solution: Ensure well-draining soil and avoid overwatering.

Winter Protection

  • Highly winter-hardy, but young plants benefit from mulching (2-4 inches) around the base.
  • Sunscald Protection: In exposed areas, wrap with burlap in late fall to prevent winter damage.
  • Deer & Rabbits: May browse on yews in winter—use repellents or fencing if needed.

One of the few evergreens that thrive in shade
