Neon Burst™ Dogwood Care Guide
Overview & Key Features
-
Botanical Name: Cornus alba ‘ByBoughen’ (Neon Burst™)
-
Type: Deciduous shrub in the red-twig / Tatarian dogwood family
-
Mature Size: Approximately 4-6 ft tall by 4-6 ft wide (some sources list 4-5 ft)
-
Habit: Upright to rounded / mounded habit; compact form
-
Foliage & Seasonal Interest:
-
Flowers & Fruit: Small clusters of creamy white flowers in mid spring; followed by white drupes (berries) that attract birds
-
Hardiness & Tolerance: USDA zones 2–7 (very cold-hardy)
-
Sun / Shade Tolerance: Performs best in full sun to partial shade; foliage color is more vivid in brighter sites
-
Soil Conditions: Prefers moist, organically rich, well-drained soils, but tolerant of a fairly broad soil range (even occasional wet soil)
Planting & Establishment
-
Site Choice: Select a location with good sun exposure but not intense afternoon scorch if in very hot sites.
-
Soil Preparation: Work in compost or organic material to improve soil structure, especially in heavy or clay soils. Ensure drainage is adequate to prevent waterlogging.
-
Planting Depth: Plant so that the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above surrounding soil. Don’t bury the stem crown. (General shrub practice)
-
Mulching: Apply a 2–3 in organic mulch around the base (leaving a few centimetres gap from stems/trunk) to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect roots during freeze/thaw cycles.
-
Watering (First Year): Maintain consistent moisture—water deeply and regularly during dry spells to help root establishment.
Ongoing Care
-
Watering: After establishment, Neon Burst™ tolerates occasional dry periods, but consistent moisture improves performance, color, and longevity.
-
Fertilizing: Use a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring, applying according to label directions. Avoid excess nitrogen which may favor foliage at the expense of stem color / structure.
-
Pruning & Renewal:
-
In late winter to early spring (dormant season), perform renewal pruning: remove 20–25% of the oldest stems to the ground to stimulate new growth (younger stems produce the best stem color)
-
Alternatively, in some thicker shrubs you may coppice (cut all stems to ~8 in above ground) every 2–3 years in colder zones for rejuvenation.
-
Also remove dead, broken, crossing or weak branches.
-
Avoid heavy pruning later in the growing season as it may reduce desired stem color or stress the plant.
-
-
Suckers / Spreading: Neon Burst™ dogwood may produce root suckers (colonial spread). If you prefer a clean specimen form, remove suckers at their origin.
Pests, Diseases & Issues
-
Potential Pests: Leaf miners, scale insects, borers
-
Potential Diseases: Leaf spots, twig or leaf blights, canker (especially in hot stressed plants)
-
Preventive Practices:
-
Ensure good airflow by not crowding shrubs and thinning interior growth.
-
Avoid overhead watering when foliage is wet for extended periods.
-
Sanitize pruning tools; promptly remove diseased or dead wood.
-
Provide plants with adequate nutrition and water so they are vigorous and better able to resist pathogens.
-
Seasonal Interest & Landscaping Uses
-
Offers color in all seasons: chartreuse / yellow foliage through summer, vivid fall tones, and bright red stems in winter.
-
Works well as a specimen shrub, accent, hedge, or mass planting.
-
Because it tends to fill out to the ground, you may not need understory “facer” plants in front.
-
Tolerant of urban conditions and pollution, making it suitable in city or streetscape plantings.
