Overview

  • Botanical Name: Penstemon barbatus ‘Pink Pearls’ (trade name in the Bejeweled™ series)

  • Common Name: Bearded Penstemon ‘Pink Pearls’

  • Mature Size: Approx 16‑20 inches tall × 20‑24 inches wide

  • Flower Colour & Season: Medium‑pink tubular flowers appear in late spring into early summer; strong stems hold blooms upright for full display.

  • Foliage: Dark blue‑green, lance‑shaped foliage provides contrast and stays attractive even when not in bloom.

  • Key Attributes:

    • Drought tolerant once established.

    • Attracts hummingbirds and bees.

    • Strong full‑sun performer in well‑drained soils.

Light, Soil & Site Requirements

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6+ hours of direct sun) is ideal for best bloom and habit.

  • Soil: Prefers well‑drained soil. Better in lean to average fertility soils. Avoid heavy, poorly drained or constantly wet soils especially in winter.

  • Spacing: Allow for 20‑24″ of width to let the mound fill in properly.

Planting & Maintenance

  • Plant when weather is favorable (spring or early summer) so roots can establish.

  • Water regularly during the first season as the plant becomes established; afterwards it is more drought tolerant. According to general penstemon culture, about 1″ of water/week during summer is good.

  • Dead‑heading spent flower spikes can help encourage tidier appearance and potential re‑bloom in some years. Avoid over‑fertilizing. Rich soils may lead to floppy growth or weaker stems. Many penstemons thrive in leaner soils.

  • In colder climates: Provide light mulch over winter if the site is exposed, but ensure soil drainage remains good.

Cold‑Climate & Zone Considerations

  • The ‘Pink Pearls’ cultivar is rated for Zones 4a‑8b in official sources.

  • For a region like yours (Zone 3 or near it), success depends on site: full sun exposure, excellent drainage (especially in winter), no standing water or heavy clay soils.

  • Avoid planting where snow melt or spring flooding may leave the crown soggy — penstemons are sensitive to winter wet/crown rot.

  • In exposed winters, a thin protective mulch may help but avoid burying crown deeply.
