Ponytail Palm

Beaucarnea recurvata

Care Difficulty
Easy. One of the most forgiving houseplants, making it an excellent choice for beginners and frequent travellers.

Light Requirements
Bright light to full sun. A south- or west-facing window is ideal. It can tolerate medium light but grows best with several hours of bright light each day.

Water Requirements
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away. Water much less frequently during the winter months.

Humidity
Average household humidity is perfect. This plant tolerates dry indoor air extremely well.

Pet Safety
Non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Growth Speed
Slow. Ponytail Palms are long-lived plants that gradually increase in size over many years.

Expected Mature Size

  • Indoors: 3 to 6 feet tall
  • Spread: 2 to 4 feet
  • Outdoors in warm climates: Up to 20 feet tall

Pot Size
Prefers to be slightly root-bound and usually only needs repotting every 3 to 5 years.

Where it Grows Best
Indoors in bright, sunny rooms with warm temperatures between 60 and 85°F (16 to 29°C). It can be moved outdoors during the summer in a sunny location once nighttime temperatures stay above 55°F (13°C).

Perfect for…

  • Beginners
  • Busy plant owners
  • Sunny windows
  • Offices
  • Pet-friendly homes
  • Low-maintenance plant collections

Common Mistakes

  • Overwatering, which is the leading cause of failure.
  • Using heavy soil that doesn't drain well.
  • Allowing the plant to sit in standing water.
  • Growing in very low light, resulting in slow, weak growth.
  • Watering on a schedule instead of checking the soil first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it really a palm?
No. Despite its name, the Ponytail Palm is actually a succulent related to agaves, not a true palm.

Why does it have a swollen trunk?
The enlarged base, called a caudex, stores water, allowing the plant to survive long periods without watering.

How often should I water it?
Typically every 2 to 4 weeks indoors, depending on the season and your home's conditions. Always let the soil dry completely before watering again.

Can it grow outdoors?
Yes. In Zone 3, it can be enjoyed outdoors during the summer in full sun but must be brought indoors before temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C).

Should I fertilize it?
Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced cactus or houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Do not fertilize during winter.

Why are the leaf tips turning brown?
Brown tips are often caused by inconsistent watering, mineral buildup from tap water, or natural aging. Trim the brown tips if desired without cutting into the healthy green tissue.
