Salix discolor (and related hardy willow varieties)

Pussy Willow is a hardy, fast-growing shrub or small tree best known for its soft, silvery catkins that appear in very early spring, often while snow is still on the ground. These fuzzy “pussies” are one of the first signs of spring on the prairies and are widely used in cut branches, floral arrangements, and seasonal décor.

Exceptionally cold hardy and adaptable, Pussy Willow thrives in Saskatchewan conditions and is easy to grow with minimal care. It also provides an important early food source for pollinators and works well in naturalized plantings, shelterbelts, and wetter areas of the landscape.
