Overview & Key Characteristics

  • Botanical Name: Sedum ‘SunSparkler® Dazzleberry’ (PP22457)

  • Common Name: Dazzleberry Sedum

  • Habit: Low‑growing, mound‑forming or ground‑cover style; blue‑grey foliage with later raspberry‑pink flower heads in late summer/fall.

  • Mature Size: Height approx 6‑8 inches (15‑20 cm), spread roughly 12‑18 inches (30‑45 cm).

  • Hardiness: Zones 4‑9 typically; with good site conditions may perform in cold climates.

  • Special Features: Drought tolerant; deer resistant; great for rock gardens, edging, containers.

Light & Site Requirements

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6+ hours) is best for strong foliage colour and flowering.

  • Soil/Drainage: Needs very well‑drained soil (rocky, sandy, gravelly) — excessive moisture leads to rot.

  • Moisture: Prefers dry to average moisture once established, rather than wet or rich soils.

Planting, Watering & Maintenance

  • Planting: Plant in spring after last frost, in a spot with full sun and excellent drainage.

  • Watering:

    • During establishment: moderate watering to keep roots active.

    • After establishment: minimal watering; succulence means it handles drought. Overwatering is a risk.

  • Soil Nutrition: Light feeding only if soil is extremely lean; avoid rich soils that may cause floppy growth.

  • Pruning / Maintenance: After flowering, you can lightly trim to maintain tidy habit. Remove any old or damaged growth in early spring.

Notes for Cold Climate / Zone 3

  • Although rated for Zones 4‑9, many sedums can perform well in cold climates when planted on a sunny, elevated site with excellent drainage (e.g., slope, rock garden) so that water doesn’t accumulate over winter.

  • Avoid low‑lying areas with poor drainage or heavy clay, which may cause crown rot in winter.

  • Snow cover may protect shorter plants, but ensure they are not in standing water when the ground thaws.

  • Because it’s low and compact, it’s well suited for front‑of‑border or rock garden uses in prairie/Zone 3 landscapes.
