- Water deeply once a week; increase frequency during hot, dry periods
-
Mulching:
- Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds
- Ensure mulch is kept a few inches away from the crown to prevent rot
Fertilizing
- First Year: Incorporate compost or a balanced, slow-release fertilizer into the soil at planting time
-
Established Plants:
- Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges
- Avoid excessive fertilization, as it can lead to overly vigorous growth that may require more frequent division
Pruning & Maintenance
- Pruning Time: Late fall, after foliage has been killed by a hard freeze
-
How to Prune:
- Cut back foliage to about 2 inches above the soil line to prevent pests and diseases
- Remove any dead or damaged leaves during the growing season to maintain plant health
